Psychiatrists

A psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in diagnosing, treating, and preventing mental health disorders. Psychiatrists treat patients with a range of disorders as outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), which is the gold standard classification of mental health disorders in the United States. As physicians, psychiatrists are trained to understand the complex interaction between mind and body and can use a full range of diagnostic tests, including laboratory analysis and psychological testing.

Psychiatric practice occurs in a variety of settings, including inpatient psychiatric hospitals, outpatient clinics, emergency rooms, substance abuse treatment programs, and general hospitals.
