Post-Event Processing

Post-event processing (PEP) refers to a self-focused rumination, or reflection, about past social performance and has been uniquely linked to social anxiety disorder (SAD). PEP is characterized as a process in which individuals review and evaluate their social performance, as well as how others may have perceived them during a social situation. With each repeated review, the individual deconstructs aspects of his or her social performance and engages in ruminative reinterpretation, developing an increasingly distorted view of the original situation, his or her performance, the behaviors of others, and the outcome of the social situation. As this process of reevaluation continues, the memory becomes less accurate but more accessible to the individual.
