Narcotics Anonymous

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is an international peer-support mutual-help organization (MHO) comprising men and women who have an addiction to drugs. It began in the 1950s in the United States to help individuals initiate and support long-term recovery from substance use disorder. Although the emphasis in NA is on drugs other than alcohol (for which the MHO Alcoholics Anonymous [AA] was founded in 1935), NA emphasizes abstinence from all substances including alcohol because of the risks of developing a cross-addiction to alcohol and the ability of alcohol to acutely impair judgment and disinhibit individuals, which can increase the risk of relapse with individuals’ primary drug of use (e.g., heroin).
