Milieu therapy (MT) is an evolving, frequently used term that is dependent on the culture in which it is implemented, the individuals it serves, the society’s technical development, the availability of resources, and the organization in which it functions; but it is broadly defined as planned therapeutic services provided to individuals by a coordinated team within a given setting that utilize the environment to effect positive change. Therapeutic milieu, therapeutic community, and milieu therapy are labels often used interchangeably, with all three based on social processes operating within a therapeutic environment that affect the therapy and the expected outcome.
