Mal de Ojo

Mal de ojo is a common condition among Hispanic populations, and it requires understanding the relation between the mind and body in Latin American culture. Mal de ojo is a culture-specific disorder consisting of symptoms of weeping, severe headaches, fever, and fretfulness. Children and young animals are believed to be particularly vulnerable to the disorder. The common causes of the onset of mal de ojo are envy, usually in the form of a glance from a person of high social standing to an individual of lower social status. The family of the individual with mal de ojo understands the disorder by saying that a person of higher social standing is envious of the children of a family with lower social status.
