Latinos/Hispanics represent individuals of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Caribbean, South or Central American, and other Spanish descents, irrespective of race. The term Latino is used throughout this entry to refer to individuals who are from any of these countries or continents. Latinos are a racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse group of individuals. In 2013, people of Latino origin were the largest ethnic or racial minority group in the United States (54 million), with the majority of Latinos being of Mexican origin. By the year 2060, this figure is projected to increase to 128.8 million. In the state of California, Latinos are the majority ethnic and racial group (surpassing Whites and making up the highest percentage of the state’s population).
