Hormones are chemical messengers that make up one part of the endocrine system. The endocrine system is unique and different from the other body systems, such as the cardiovascular or renal system, in that the organs that make up the endocrine system are not all physically connected. These organs include the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, the thyroid gland, the parathyroid glands, the adrenal glands, the pancreas, the ovaries, and the testes. Classically, the organs within the endocrine system make hormones, and these hormones exert an effect on the target organs, which are often distant from the original organ that made the hormone.
