Eating and Feeding Disorders: Overview

Eating and feeding disorders are a broad category of diagnoses, with symptoms ranging from restriction of food to binge eating to inappropriate compensatory behaviors such as purging or excessive exercise. They can affect individuals of any age, weight, or sex. What unites these disordered eating patterns is their maladaptive effect on well-being and/or daily functioning. The diagnostic criteria for the feeding and eating disorders are described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5).
