Dieting is a general term used to refer to a broad scope of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral phenomena involved in the pursuit of weight loss. It is a term that has been used as a catchall to describe a variety of very different attitudes and behaviors. Different definitions of dieting may involve clearly healthy dietary behaviors, such as eating fruits and vegetables, and/or clearly unhealthy behaviors, such as fasting and skipping meals.
