Coraje

Coraje is a Spanish word that can be glossed as “anger.” Coraje is also considered to be a Latino folk illness that manifests with a variety of symptoms and that is cured, oftentimes by lay healers or family members, using some kind of a limpia (cleansing by an egg or a broom or other object that can lift the anger of the individual). This entry briefly describes variations in use and understanding of the term coraje as it is employed in reference to emotional situations that are understood to have caused an illness state in an individual. The clinical importance of the term with respect to practitioner-patient communication is also addressed in the concluding discussion.
