Clinician-Rated Psychopathology Domains for Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a heterogeneous clinical syndrome. It is not a disease entity where all patients share the same pathophysiology and manifestations. The concept is similar to dementia if specific forms such as Alzheimer’s, multi-infarct, pernicious anemia are not defined. Persons diagnosed with schizophrenia do not share a typical onset, symptom manifestations, or course of illness. Morbidity is present from birth in some and is associated with developmental pathology in many, and all, by definition, will eventually have psychotic symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations, and/or thought disorganization. Course and outcome vary from good recovery to continuous symptoms. Given the substantial individual differences within the syndrome, it is essential to deconstruct schizophrenia for individualized clinical care or for scientific discovery.
