Peer recovery support services are not treatment in the commonly understood clinical sense of the term. Peer recovery support services are designed and delivered by peers in recovery, not by professionals employed in clinical and agency settings. They are grounded in a strength-based approach that focuses on Wellness and a full reengagement with the community for recovering individuals and their family members.

Peer recovery support services are available throughout the continuum of care—pretreatment, during treatment, posttreatment, and in some cases, as an alternative to professional treatment. Successful peer initiatives network and build strong and mutually supportive linkages with formal systems of care and with professionals in their communities.
