THE UNIVERSITY OF Minnesota is the principal research university in the state of Minnesota, and its campus in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis—St. Paul is the fourth largest campus in the United States in terms of student enrollment. It is also the home of the world's first interdisciplinary stem cell institute, founded in 1999.

The University of Minnesota is a land grant university, chartered in 1851 and enrolling its first students in 1857. Following a temporary closure during the Civil War, it reopened in 1867 and was upgraded from a preparatory school to a college in 1869.
