BELGIUM IS ONE of the most active European countries when it comes to stem cell research whether from embryonic or from adult stem cells. Along with Finland, France, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, Belgium is an enthusiastic backer for both encouraging and engaging in stem cell research.

The position of the Belgian system of stem cell research is complicated. Most of the research is conducted at the regional level instead of the national level. The Flanders Inter—University Institute for Biotechnology has united all of the Flemish Universities. It received a major portion of the financing from the government of Flanders for research.
