Injuries can be divided into two categories—acute and chronic. In acute injury, a specific event causes direct trauma to the body and subsequent injury to the tissues involved. Acute injury can vary greatly, from an ankle sprain to a corneal (eye) abrasion and almost everything in between. Acute injury can occur to soft tissue, bone, organs, or nerves.
