Splenic Injury

Although the liver is the most frequently injured abdominal organ, the spleen is the most frequently injured organ in sports and the most common cause of death due to abdominal trauma in athletic activity.

Epidemiology and Biomechanics

Injuries to the spleen can result from a direct force to the abdomen, especially the left upper quadrant; from a sudden deceleration when the hilum is torn; or by displacement of lower left rib fractures.
