Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a rare but potentially devastating occurrence in sports. In the general population, motor vehicle crashes are the most common cause at around 40%. Sports and recreation injuries are responsible for about 12% of SCI, diving accidents being the most common cause in this category. However, any sport involving speed, contact, or collision presents an environment where SCI can occur. This includes, but is not limited to, ice hockey, football, motor sports, and cycling.
