Coxa saltans, or snapping hip, is a condition in which one feels a snapping sensation with movement of the hip. This may be accompanied by an audible pop and sometimes pain. There are three types of coxa saltans: external, internal, and intraarticular. Coxa saltans is common between the ages of 15 and 40 and is more often found in women. It is particularly common in athletes and dancers who undergo repetitive twisting motions about the hip.
