Chronic instability of the ankle is a condition that may arise after one or more acute ankle sprains. Ankle sprains, which most often involve tearing or stretching of the lateral (outside) ligaments of the ankle during excessive inversion (in which the foot rolls inward), are among the most common injuries in all of orthopedics.
