Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic endocrine disorder characterized by hyperglycemia (elevated blood sugar), caused by decreased insulin secretion by the pancreas, decreased insulin sensitivity at the tissues, or both. Children with DM have many lifestyle adjustments to make to regulate their blood glucose (sugar), but in general, DM should not limit their ability to participate in sports.
