Contusions (Bruises)

One of the most common sports injuries is a contusion, which results from blunt force trauma resulting in the accumulation of blood in tissue due to disrupted capillaries.

The contusion is noticeably different from ecchymosis, which is a bruise with significant discoloration but lacking swelling (edema). At the other end of the spectrum is the hematoma, which is a contusion with significant swelling due to accumulation of blood and serous fluid from the disrupted capillaries and tissues.
