Washington State is in the northwest corner of the continental United States, bordered by Idaho to the east, Oregon to the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and Canada to the north. Nicknamed the “Evergreen State” and situated within the Pacific Northwest, the state has an area of 66,456 square miles (172,120 square kilometers). The 2010 U.S. Census records the population at 6,724,540, with a population density of just over 100 people per square mile. The Cascade Mountains form an east/west divide through the state that continues to serve not only as a geographic boundary but also as one of climate, economics, and politics.
