Suspensions

School personnel have used suspensions as a mechanism for removing from K-12 institutions students who are involved in activities that counter school expectations, culture, and policy. The academic penalties for suspended youth can influence their matriculation through school and can extend outside the classroom. In the U.S. public school system, students of color, low socioeconomic status, and those identified for special education account for higher proportions of suspensions and expulsions when disaggregated by subgroup. This disproportionality has increased the reevaluation of how policies are used within education to address school discipline.
