In higher education, study abroad involves students engaging in educational programs to earn academic credit in international contexts. Benefits of study abroad relate to improved and broadened global perspectives, stronger self confidence, and cross-cultural effectiveness. Though there has been a steady increase in the number of students who choose to study abroad in the 1990s and 2000s, those who participate in international study still represent a small fraction of those enrolled in U.S. higher education. Further, there are lingering disparities in the demographics of study abroad participants and the institutions in which participants are enrolled.
