School Size/Class Size

School size and class size are issues that invoke strong interest and concern from teachers, parents, policy makers, and other key education stakeholders. As schools have lost nearly a quarter of a million teachers since 2008 because of budget cuts, and the long-lingering aftermath of the recession continues to plague state educational funding, there have been many fierce attacks on the value of class/school size reduction. Whether “size matters” in student academic achievement has long been debated and, despite clear educational research on the issue, the jury of politicians, pundits, school boards, and other education policy makers beleaguered by budget cuts seems to remain mired in deliberation regarding the matter.
