Romania is located in southeastern Europe and is bordered by Bulgaria, the Ukraine, and the Black Sea. It has a population of about 22 million people. It is a relatively young country, having gained its formal independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1878. The country spent much of the 20th century participating in war, being occupied by the Soviet Union, and being ruled by a dictator. Only in the 1990s was the country finally free to focus on improving society with education.
