Ohio, also referred to as the Buckeye State, is derived from the Iroquois Indian word meaning “Great River.” Situated in the midwest, Ohio is bordered by five states, one country, lake, and river: Michigan and Lake Erie (Canada) on the north; Pennsylvania on the east; West Virginia and Kentucky on the southeast and south separated by the Ohio River; and Indiana on the west. With an area of 44,825 square miles, Ohio is the 34th-largest state holding the seventh-largest population in the United States. According to the 2010 U.S. Census report, Ohio's population was 11,536,504, of whom 86.8 percent are high school graduates and 23.6 percent have attained a bachelor's degree or higher.
