North Dakota had a 2010 population of 672,591. The modern educational system emerged from the small rural common schools of the territorial days of the 1800s.

The Department of Public Instruction, Educational Standards and Practices Board, and Board of Higher Education provide educational administration and oversight. There are statewide core content and achievement standards, although the state has yet to adopt the national Common Core Standards. Higher education options include 11 public colleges and universities, five tribal community colleges, and four private schools.
