New Zealand is located in the Southern Hemisphere off the southwest coast of Australia. The two islands of New Zealand create an area of 270,500 square kilometers. According to the U.S. State Department, New Zealand's population is estimated at 4.4 million. The majority of New Zealanders, or Kiwis as they are informally known, live in the urban areas on the north island. New Zealander income is highest for those of European descent and lowest for those from the Asian ethnic groups.
