Known chiefly for its gambling casinos and breathtaking scenery, Nevada is the seventh-largest state in the United States, covering 110,567 square miles. According to the 2010 census, the population of Nevada is 2,700,551. Nevada became a state in 1864 during the Civil War and is officially nicknamed the Battle Born State. It is also frequently referred to as the Silver State because of its large resources of silver and other metals. The landscape of Nevada varies from plains to deserts and mountains.
