Mississippi is a southeastern state geographically bordered on the north by Tennessee, on the west by Arkansas and Louisiana, on the east by Alabama, and on the south by the Gulf of Mexico. The capital city and largest by population is Jackson.

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit due west of Mississippi, causing major damage to the Gulf Coast areas. State officials calculated approximately 90 percent of structures within one-half mile of the coast were completely destroyed due to storm surge. Half of the 13 casinos, floating on barges along the coast, were washed hundreds of yards inland. Two bridges along the coast were completely destroyed, impacting travel along U.S. Highway 90.
