Located in the far northeastern corner of the United States, Maine is bordered on the north by Canada and by New Hampshire on the south and west. The 35,387 square miles of Maine is heavily forested, and the state's official nickname is the Pine Tree State. It is also sometimes called the Lumber State. The first sawmill in the United States was built in Maine in 1623. According to the 2010 census, Maine has a population of 1,328,361. Although Augusta is the capital, it is the ninth-largest city in the state. The largest cities are Portland, Lewiston, and Bangor.
