Kentucky

The Commonwealth of Kentucky is a southern state in the United States, bordered on the north by Illinois, [Page 415]Indiana, and Ohio; on the east by West Virginia and Virginia; on the west by Missouri; and to the south by Tennessee. The area now known as Kentucky was largely inhabited by various Native American tribes until approximately 1650, particularly in the waterway and game areas. Kentucky became the 15th state admitted to the union on June 1, 1792. The state is known for bluegrass music, a subgenre of country music, which takes its roots from Scottish and Welsh immigrants to Appalachian areas and African American influences from jazz music.
