Robert Mason Hauser is a Vilas research professor, emeritus and Samuel A. Stouffer professor of sociology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. After retiring in 2010, Hauser was appointed executive director, Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education at the National Research Council (National Academy of Sciences). Hauser received his Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Michigan in 1968 under the tutelage of Otis Dudley Duncan. He joined the faculty at Brown University in 1967 and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1969—where he helped establish a world-renowned sociology department and mentored generations of leading scholars in the field.
