Alabama is a southern state in the United States, bordered on the north by Tennessee, on the east by Georgia, on the west by Mississippi, and to the south by Florida. Part of Alabama also touches the Gulf of Mexico to form the Gulf Coast. Its capital city is Montgomery, its largest city is Birmingham, and its oldest city is Mobile, which was founded by French colonists. Although states to the west were more directly impacted, Alabama received damage from the 2005 landfall of Hurricane Katrina, particularly in the Mobile Bay area.
