Elementary Education

Educating young minds is crucial for the future of humanity, and can often influence young people to consider the issues of poverty, the environment, and world peace. Education is seen as a necessary step to achieving a good quality of life. Elementary education for the young existed across cultures throughout history. In ancient Greece, Plato brought the concept of compulsory education to Western culture in his book The Republic around 380 b.c.e. Martin Luther advocated compulsory education in Europe and promoted the importance of reading and understanding the Bible. The Reformation in 1524 prompted the first national compulsory educational system in Scotland. In 1774, Empress Maria Theresa introduced compulsory primary education to Austria.
