Affluent Children

Affluent children have always garnered significant advantages in terms of exposure to educational opportunities and access to extracurricular activities. Social science research typically focuses on the relationship between poverty and individual student outcomes, overlooking the school life experiences of affluent children. Family affluence grants children access to high-quality schools in safe neighborhoods or private schooling, and affords the ability to buy academic support in the form of tutors, special lessons, and travel. Taken together, attendance in a resource-rich school, involvement in specialized activities, and exposure to diverse life experiences provide affluent children with important capital resources, developing a worldview beyond the local community.
