The Kingdom of Denmark comprises Denmark proper and two autonomous provinces, the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Denmark proper is located between the Baltic Sea (to the west) and the North Sea (to the east), and is bordered by Germany in the south. The country is 16,621 square miles (43,098 square kilometers) and, along with Norway and Sweden, is part of the cultural region known as Scandinavia. Denmark's population is over 5.5 million people, with approximately 87 percent ethnic Scandinavians, in part because of its border regions, the homogenizing influence of the Lutheran State Church, its late industrialization, and restrictive immigration policy.
