Andrea Kennedy was born on July 2, 1964, to a middle-class family. Intelligent and athletic, she captained the swim team, was an officer in the National Honor Society, and graduated valedictorian of Milby High School in 1982. She graduated the University of Texas School of Nursing in 1986 and held a postoperative nursing position from 1986 until 1994. She gained international attention in 2001 when she drowned her five children, becoming an early case in the national debate over postpartum depression.
