The second-least populous state in the country, Vermont was the first state to join the United States after its formation, having been established as a sovereign republic during the Revolutionary War. One of the only states to have once had a sovereign government, it abolished slavery during its 14-year Republic period and thus became the first state to do so; the state was a strong supporter of nationwide abolition in the 19th century.
