Texas Rangers
In 1823, Stephen F. Austin hired 10 men to ride the range and protect settlers from Indian attacks. These 10 men, known as range riders, were the first organized police force in Texas and perhaps the first mounted militia in the United States.
Texas Ranger history is divided into five distinct eras of protecting the frontier, fighting in revolutions and wars, avoiding abolishment, and formal organization.
