One of the original thirteen colonies, South Carolina was also the first to secede from the Union to found the Confederate States of America.

Police and Punishment

In South Carolina's early days, law enforcement duties fell primarily to the town watch and constables. Militias could also be raised by the colonial government when necessary. After statehood, many cities replaced their town watch with a city guard, with expanded duties. Modern police departments evolved out of the city guard and were reorganized during and after Reconstruction.
