Richard was the youngest of five children raised by Mexican immigrants Julian and Mercedes Ramirez. He was born on February 29, 1960, in El Paso, Texas, and like his siblings before him, had medical disabilities throughout childhood. In particular, he suffered from epilepsy, which resulted in grand mal seizures.
