Joseph Ragen is best known for serving as the long-standing warden of the Illinois State Penitentiary at Joliet. He served as warden at Joliet-Stateville for 25 years from 1936 to 1961. Joseph E. Ragen was born in 1896 in Trenton, Illinois. His father was the county sheriff. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War I.
