Polygamy intended as plural marriage or polygyny, that is, a marriage in which the man has more than one wife at the same time, has been a widespread practice throughout history, including in the Judeo-Christian tradition. Bigamy is the criminal act of marrying another person when one is still married to someone else in countries with laws against multiple marriage. In such countries, the resulting second marriage becomes void if discovered.
