One of the original thirteen colonies, New Hampshire's history goes back to the early 17th century. Today, it is one of the smallest and least populous states, its recent history and demographics having been greatly affected by the growth of the Boston metropolitan area in neighboring Massachusetts—and by the transformation of many former farm and orchard towns on the border into exurban bedroom communities and the cold war–fueled growth of tech sector companies like Lockheed-Martin, Raytheon, Digital, and Wang.
