Eliot Ness (1903–57) was a Prohibition and Treasury Department agent; Cleveland, Ohio, public safety director; and leader of the famed Untouchables, upon which two TV series and the 1987 movie of the same name were based. Ness was born in Chicago to Peter and Emma Ness, Norwegian immigrants. Ness was a studious boy who grew up reading Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes books while working in his father's bakery.
