Missouri became a territory in 1812 and a state in 1820. After removal of the Osage Indians to west of the state line, Jackson County was organized and Independence was designated as its county seat. Kansas City evolved in 1889 from a tract of land located along the Missouri River. The area expanded throughout the 19th century, first in response to the great westward trails prior to the Civil War and then because of its strategic positioning as a hub of railroad transportation.
