Instances of child abuse have been documented as early as 322 b.c.e., during the era in which many believed that one's actions should promote quality of life for the greater good. Since then, child abuse and maltreatment have been part of virtually every culture and society. Protections against child abuse were instituted in the 1700s but were not effective until the mid- to late 1800s. Child abuse continues to be a social concern, despite the ongoing effort to reduce child abuse in the United States.
