Consultation: Mental Health
Consultation is a method of providing preventively oriented psychoeducational services in which a consultant (e.g., school psychologist) and consultee (e.g., teacher) develop a cooperative partnership and engage in a systematic problem solving process. The goal is to enhance and empower consultee systems, so as to promote client (e.g., student) adjustment and academic performance. With regard to models for practice, behavioral consultation, mental health consultation, and organizational development consultation are the three major human services models of consultation within school psychology. Erchul and Schulte (1993) further note that mental health consultation distinguishes itself through its conceptual bases in psychodynamic and systems-level thinking, a populationriented preventive model of psychiatry, crisis theory and intervention, and support systems.
